It’s easy to dismiss bees as insects…because insects ARE insects…right? Think again. Studies are suggesting that bees are conscious of the world that’s around them and able to make subjective choices that change their behavior.
Researchers are saying that bees are seemingly similar to humans in the sense that they too are controlled by their own desires too; just that consciousness in humans comes from our mid brain, for the bees, they have also a similar “mid brain” structure.
PESTICIDES VS BEES
In March, scinetists claimed pesticides alter the foraging behaviour of bumblebees on wild flowers and alter the plants they prefer to visit.
This hinders their ability to learn the skills needed to extract nutritious nectar and pollen, potentially making their chances of surviving more slender. Researchers from the University of Guelph in Canada and Royal Holloway University of London, showed that bumblebees exposed to a realistic level of a neonicotinoid insecticide called thiamethoxam, collected more pollen but took longer to do so than control bees.
The bees exposed to the pesticide also chose to forage from a different flower in comparison to control bees. ‘Bees rely on learning to locate flowers, track their profitability and work-out how best to efficiently extract nectar and pollen,’ said Professor Nigel Raine from the University of Guelph. ‘If exposure to low levels of pesticide affects their ability to learn, bees may struggle to collect food and impair the essential pollination services they provide to both crops and wild plants.’
For humans, it is our mid brain that connects the external experiences from our sensors (such as touch, vibration, heat etc) with our internal experiences, and it “makes sense”. For the bees, they do not “just act on their immediate sensations” – they make subjective choices which influences and changes their behavior.
The researchers from MacQuarie University in Sydney state:
The honey bee particularly is held up as an insect with cognitive capacities that rival those of many mammals. Without consideration of the underlying mechanisms, this may seem like no more than a curiosity.
The complex act of flying and gathering pollen is so difficult it requires consciousness to reconcile all the differing demands on the insect. They need to have a complex model of their environment which is affected by their own needs and this is true of many other insect varieties as well.
Scanning the brains of the insects show that these bees don’t just respond to ‘primary sensory input, but rather by egocentric characteristics’, meaning that the bees actually process environment/external input, then make a decision.
The authors added further:
The systems that underlie these abilities were shaped by evolutionary pressures similar to those that shaped the mammalian midbrain. he insect brain does a similar sort of modeling, for the same reasons, in a similar way.
It’s really fascinating to show how evolved, smart and brilliant bees are, and I’m even more convinced that these clever creatures would also know how to choose foods that are best for their health, activity and well being. Worker bees consume bee pollen to keep themselves going strong.
