Red Grape Skin Extract Background and Benefits

Grapes are the fruits of any plant in the Vitis genus, commonly known as grape vines. The common grape vine, known scientifically as Vitis vinifera, is the most commercially important species in this genus. It is native to central Europe and southwestern Asia, although grapes are now cultivated throughout the world. The common grape vine has up to 10,000 varieties, but only a relatively small number are commercially significant.

The use of grapes in winemaking is at least 7,000 years old, based on wine jars found in northern Iran. The ancient Mesopotamians and Egyptians also cultivated grapes and made wine on a large scale. Grapes were an essential part of Greek culture for food, wine and herbal medicine.

The uses of grapes in European folk medicine are extensive. Unripe grapes were used for sore throats and ripe grapes, were used to treat skin and eye infections as well as diseases of the liver and kidneys. Raisins were used to treat dehydration and constipation. Grape leaves were often used to treat hemorrhoids.

Grapes may have a variety of colors when ripe, ranging from light green to nearly black. The color depends primarily on the amount of anthocyanins in the grape, which are reddish plant pigments. Anthocyanins are also the source of many health benefits, making red grapes the most useful type for dietary supplements. These supplements often use the grape skins, since this is the part of the plant with the highest concentration of anthocyanins.

Trans-resveratrol is also an important component of grape skin extract. This phytoalexin protects the grapes from fungi such as Botrytis cinerea. Additional components in grape skin include a variety of phenolic compounds.

Oxifend® Red Grape Skin Extract

Oxifend® Red Grape Skin Extract is derived from varieties of Vitis vinifera that are grown in Marlborough, New Zealand. It is extracted naturally from non-fermented grapes with a proprietary 100% Aqua Pure process. This process uses only water, without ethanol or other harsh chemicals.

Most commercial grape skin extract comes from grapes that have already been fermented as a byproduct of making red wine. This process involves bleaching, which removes the anthocyanins in the grapes skins. The extraction process also uses ethanol and other solvents to remove components from the grape skins.

The purpose of Oxifend® Red Grape Skin Extract is to provide the health benefits of red wine in powdered form. It is high in phenols and other active components compared to other grape skin extracts. Laboratory tests show that Oxifend® Red Grape Skin Extract contains 20 active components, while other extracts typically have about four. The production level of Oxifend® Red Grape Skin Extract is also very low, making it a rare ingredient in health supplements.

Uses of Red Grape Skin Extract

Red grape skin extract is very high in resveratrol, which accounts for many of its health benefits. These benefits include supporting heart health, cholesterol level management, antioxidant support and the body’s ability to manage healthy blood sugar levels.

Signs You May Need Red Grape Skin Extract

Cardiovascular signs are the most significant indications that you may need red grape skin extract, especially risk factors for heart attacks and strokes. An unhealthy cholesterol profile may also mean that grape skin extract could help you.

Kiwifruit extract - Kiwifruit is the edible fruit of woody vines in the Actinidia genus, although it typically refers specifically to A. deliciosa. Biologically active components in kiwifruit extract include beta-carotene, lutein and zeaxanthin.
