You've likely seen, read or heard news about sudden death in athletes and if you hadn't, here are three references:
As I'm in the healthcare industry, running a physiotherapy and rehab group that specializes in sports injuries, orthopedic and traumatic conditions, we are in the loop of reading and hearing about famous athletes that drop dead during a particular exercise.
Read some of the international and local Singapore news on athletes who had died during exercise:
Just four days after English Premier League midfielder Fabrice Muamba suffered cardiac arrest during an English FA Cup match in March 2012, Indian footballer Venkatesh suffered a similar fate during a match in Bangalore, India.
The 27-year-old Venkatesh, who was playing in a district level league match on March 21, collapsed on the field during the back end of the match. While 23-year-old Muamba recovered from his mid-match cardiac arrest in a London hospital, Venkatesh did not survive.
In a similar incident in Singapore a week earlier, 19-year-old Temasek Polytechnic student Muhammad Khairil Muhamad Nizam suddenly collapsed halfway through a friendly football match.
He was rushed to hospital in an unconscious state but didn’t survive. Initial reports indicated that he had died of heart failure.
There have been other previous sudden death incidences related to sports in Singapore. In 2011, a 22-year-old Singaporean runner, Malcolm Sng Wei Ren, collapsed and died during the Standard Chartered Marathon Singapore.
Or you may also notice many champion marathon runners who looks waaaaaaaaaay older than their years?
You'd think that surely someone who is in their peak of physical conditioning and fitness would be healthy and also look healthy?
Unfortunately, that doesn't always happen - you see, being fit doesn't automatically equate to being healthy. Truth to be told, there are many fitness and sports enthusiasts that look ok to good on the outside but have really bad stuff happening to them on the inside.
Why does this happen?
Well you see, health is multi-dimensional. If one exercises a lot but at the same time, smokes a lot...would they be healthy? Or if these sports and fitness enthusiasts ignore eating well balanced or highly nutritious food and instead focus on foods that are performance enhancers?
Of course they won't be healthy.
And that's just the surface of it. There is a bigger problem underneath - sports and fitness enthusiasts are more susceptible to the damages done by free radicals as compared to regular individuals. This is caused by their increased intake of free radicals because of their higher intake of oxygen...which is a source of free radicals.
A "regular and average" individual would take a much longer time to have the same level and amount of oxygen and free radicals that a runner or marathoner takes in during their normal trainings.
This is the #1 reason why many joggers, runners, athletes and marathoners look way older than their actual physical years.
What happens is their bodies suffer accelerated cellular death and degeneration because the increased levels of free radicals are not dealt with. Most of us need levels of anti-oxidants to combat free radicals, and athletes/fitness enthusiasts need waaaaaay more than us - the more exertion, time and effort they spend into their sports, the higher the levels of anti-oxidants they will need.
Now if you're an athlete or fitness enthusiast, it is not enough to have a simple and basic multi vitamin supplement - your body and your sport will require a much more powerful anti-oxidant with multitude of nutrients, as well as nutrients that are anti-inflammatory in nature (as you're subjecting your body to more inflammation due to exertion).
These are the reasons why many athletes and fitness/sports enthusiasts around the world trust Xtend-Life's Total Balance Series:
These are more important than all those performance-enhancing stuff and protein powder in the world today....if you value your body and health for the long term.
For the athlete, sports and fitness enthusiasts regardless of amateur or professional level (actively participating in physical training)
